Michigan Political Parties Holding Nominating Conventions

State Republicans just held their convention. No resident of the Upper Peninsula was nominated for the State Board of Education, the University of Michigan Board of Regents, Wayne State University or Michigan State University Board of Trustees. They also nominated their candidates for Attorney General and Secretary of State–no nominee from the Upper Peninsula for those two officers either. None from rural areas thorough Michigan. No rural voices.

The Democrats hold their nominating convention in a couple of weeks. The Governor, a Democrat, has endorsed the incumbents for the above offices who happen to all be Democrats. So it is doubtful that someone other than the incumbents will  be nominated over the Governor’s endorsement. None of these candidates for the above offices are from the Upper Peninsula or from any other rural area in the state.  So we will have to wait for the April 19th Democratic to see who is finally approved by the convention delegates.

What all this means is since the state’s rural population is about 22% that those citizens will be unrepresented while the state’s citizens of urban and suburban areas will have 100% of the voices representing them.

Does this mean that the Michigan Republicans and Democrats do not believe that there are any qualified people from rural areas who could serve on these boards and in these offices? How does the voice of rural citizens get heard?

So maybe the voters in our rural areas should ask these questions of the candidates when they come looking for votes this Fall. Same for the candidates for Governor, Lt. Governor and  Senate. Ask them for their plan to get more rural citizens on these elected statewide boards and in these offices.

Just a closing note, in Michigan we do not vote in primaries for Attorney General, Secretary of State or any of the above boards. Candidates are selected at closed political conventions and we get to vote only in the General election in the Fall.

Is it any wonder there are repeated movements and voices calling for a 51st or annexation to Canada? I’m 85 years old and I remember hearing my grandfather talking with the owner of the store in Fiber MI, when we were on vactions at East Lake in the 50s. As a 50 year old we enjoyed time at the 51st State Bar in the Soo. I have had several occasions when needing information from state offices that required geographic classes for state employees to explain where the U.P. or simply where it is. We do not even have a state representative living in the UP.
