Singapore U.P. Land Purchases, Michigan Population Growth from Immigrants, Government Officials Being Threatened
– INFORMED BREVITY –
This Week in RI
We don’t have anything else for this week, but next Wednesday, July 23 we’ll be publishing a new piece by Michael Broadway and Joslin Brown on President Trump’s comments and new border policies and their effect on travel warnings, economic response, and amount of Canadian visitors to the U.P.
Around the Upper Peninsula, Michigan and the World

Singapore has bought a lot of land in the Upper Peninsula. Bridge Michigan has reported that the “Government of Singapore Investment Corporation now owns more than 540,000 acres of land in the Upper Peninsula.” It is reported that Singapore is now the “largest known foreign owner of agricultural land in the state.” It owns more than 5% of all land in the Upper Peninsula.

As Michigan works hard to increase its population, a huge percentage of the state’s growth is from immigrants–60%. Michigan has benefited from billions of dollars contributed to state coffers by these immigrants relocating to Michigan. Lots of economic activity. Michigan Advance. 6.8.25.

It has become all too common to read of government officials at all levels of government being threatened by people who disagree with them. At the federal, state and local levels of governments. Now there is a report that University of Michigan Board of Regent members’ lives have been threatened, their homes vandalized and other dangerous activities by protestors of University policies. It has gotten to the point where the University hired private security to protect the Regents and their families. This is a very serious situation. Public service is hard enough these days without having your families harassed and threatened, not to mention your own life endangered. So far no reports yet of the U of M situation at other Michigan public universities. Be careful out there everyone.

With all the talk of Medicaid “reforms” at the federal level here is some interesting data: in Michigan’s 1st Congressional District, which includes the Upper Peninsula and parts of Northern Michigan there are 171,600 people enrolled in Medicaid (as of 2025 Federal reports and data). Of the number 67,100 are children; 23,100 adults (mainly low wage workers without employer health care coverage, 21,900 people with disabilities and 15,100 low income seniors. “In Michigan Medicaid is the insurer for approximately 2.6 million Michiganders. Medicaid is paid to healthcare providers, not to individuals. It is paid to these providers for medical services rendered.” (Bridge Michigan and federal and state databases).

Immigrants are those who come to the U.S. through legal means and have paperwork and are assimulating into the U.S. those who jump the border and sneak in by way of the cartel and pay the cartel for passage to be smuggled in and smuggle drugs into the U.S. are illegal, and must be found and sent back. “For they are trespassing! Come here the right way! The term immigrant is used by way too loosely. My ancestors came here the right way in the 1650s till the 1800s. And suffered great hardships.
It would be great to have a new immigration law with bipartisan support. Oh wait, there was one but the current President who was a candidate then forbade the Republicans to support it so he could use immigration as a campaign tool. As far as your ancestors, keep in mind that from 1650 thru the 1800s there was no “legal” immigration , because there was no law regarding immigration at all, there were no visas or passports, everyone was free to enter.
Obviously you didn’t read what the so called bipartisan immigration bill did. That bill required no action unti there arel over 8500 illegal crossings per day. In addition to that, a vast majority of the money sought was to go to Ukraine. Hard no. As a result of Trump winning the presidency, we now have the lowest illegal entry levels in history.
Very interesting – I had no idea that Singapore owned 5 percent of the land in the UP.
Tad
interesting, Hitler used the word assimilation. Unless you look like me, you, sir, are an immigrant. At one time California, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas belonged to Mexico until stolen by the U.S. government, concealing their murder and land grabbing under the “fake” ideology of the great robber baron brain wash “manifest destiny”. Look it up. Maybe you never heard of it. In the beginning, there were no border walls, fences or barbed wire. A simple command to fill the earth and subdue it. Not blow it up, poison it, pillage it…We all came from the same pair of DNA from which sprang diversity of all life. Hate to tell you this but you are related to every human walking this planet. Diversity is beautiful. I personally enjoy varieties of plants, animals and food. But maybe you just eat white mashed potatoes
Is there a particular UP region Singapore is purchasing the land? Is it tracts of land owned by the State?
Strange, the government is only allowed to own forts and ports according to the constitution. I remember all land managed (important term) by government was owned by the people. Government was only to ‘manage’ that land. So, how can they sell land owned by the people?
As an American, I believe foreign nations, individuals and governments should not be able to Purchase US Real Estate, EVER! Lease or Rent, but Not Own. 5% of the UP is owned by Singapore. For what purpose or reason? Does it benefit Michiganders or US Citizens? This Land Grab does not benefit our Nation.
Brice: Oh wait, we have immigration laws that were ignored. The only so called bipartisan proposal amounted free citizinship for everyone crashing the border. All we needed was a leader willing to enforce existing laws.
Thanks for the data on UP Medicaid recipients. By these figures there are 44,400 UP Medicaid recipients who are NOT children, low wage workers without health insurance, people with disabilities, or low income seniors. That is 26% of the Medicaid recipients who will have to get a job to stay on Medicaid as a result of the Big Beautiful Bill. That sounds about right, and the Trump economy is hiring. So no one will loose their health insurance as a result of the Big Beautiful Bill. Beautiful, isn’t it?
Texas just blocked no sale of land for foreigner’s
They don’t use the same rules as farmers do!
Interesting take on Singapore now owning 5% of Upper Peninsula now.
Why all you Yoopers are pissing and moaning about your neighbors and their political persuasions your being gutted bye the billionaire class/and foreign investors and a state government of both democratic and republican politicians.
Te sad state of affairs here though is your utter ignorance that seems to flow from one generation to another.
